I just got a job doing SEO and I’m not sure what to expect day to day. Any advice or tips from people working in this field?
So you got an SEO job without really knowing SEO? How’d that happen?

I understand SEO basics, but I haven’t worked in an office before. I’m excited to learn more on the job.
Boss: Why did you do that?
You: Someone on this forum said to.
Boss: You’re fired.
You: It was weblinkr.
Boss: Oh ok, that makes sense.

Keep refreshing the site all day. If it loads too fast, go to a temple and ask for tech support from above. Om shanti.
Don’t stress. It’s common for companies to hire beginners for SEO. You’ll get there.
Think of SEO as three parts:
- Relevancy - Make the best pages for what people search for.
- Popularity - Get links and mentions from other websites.
- Search Behavior - Make sure people click your links and stay on your pages.
Start with technical SEO. Use Google Search Console. Learn crawling, indexing, and ranking. Then look at content and backlinks.
Tools like GA4, Screaming Frog, and SEMRush are helpful. Avoid shortcuts like buying links or copying content. Just focus on good SEO practices.

Can AI write content and then I just fix it up?

It might work for now, but long term Google could penalize you. Use AI to help with research or outlines but write most of it yourself.
@Timmy
What if I use AI for drafts and then rewrite by hand? Would that be safer?

That could work. Record yourself talking about the topic and transcribe it. AI can help structure the content, but real experience makes it stronger. Focus on making your content unique.
@Timmy
Thanks for the advice. If you ever find that walkthrough video, I’d love to see it.

I’d watch that too. Sounds useful.
Figure out what the company expects from you. Set realistic goals early on.
Learn Screaming Frog. It handles most of the technical SEO.
For reporting, highlight good numbers and frame them well. Everyone likes to see progress, even small wins. Don’t focus on what isn’t working until you’re in a better spot.
@Cortez
Can you explain more about reporting? I’m learning but want to impress my manager.
@Cortez
Show positive data. Say impressions went up and clicks will follow. Meanwhile, fix core web vitals and keep pushing forward.
SEO jobs vary. Check the job description but expect tasks like tracking traffic, using SEMRush, creating content, and monitoring keywords.
Expect to do keyword research, optimize pages, track performance, and build links. Tools like Google Analytics help. Collaborate with writers and stay updated with trends.
So you got the job but don’t know SEO? What are your plans now?
