I just got a job doing SEO but not sure what to expect every day. What do you actually do as an SEO associate?
Wait, you got an SEO job without really knowing SEO? How does that happen?

I know the basics, but I’m still new to working in an office. Looking forward to picking things up along the way.
Boss: Why did you do that?
You: Someone on this forum said to.
Boss: You’re fired.
You: It was weblinkr.
Boss: Oh ok, carry on.

Refresh the website every 30 minutes. If it loads too fast, head to the nearest temple and pray for tech support. Om shanti.
Don’t stress, it’s normal for small companies to hire without much experience. You’ll figure it out.
Focus on three areas of SEO:
- Relevancy – Build content that answers what people search for better than competitors.
- Popularity – Get links from other sites.
- Search Behavior – Make pages that people want to click and stay on.
Start with technical SEO. Use Google Search Console to check crawling and indexing. Work on content and backlinks as you go.
Free tools to use: GA4, Google Search Console, Looker Studio. Paid ones include SEMRush or AHREFS. Screaming Frog is great for audits.
Big tip: Don’t buy links or let AI write everything. Take time to learn the right way.

Can I use AI to write and just tweak it?

It can work short term, but you could lose traffic when Google updates. Use AI for ideas, but write the main content yourself.
@Nelson
How about if I rewrite the AI-generated draft by hand after doing keyword research?

That’s a better approach. Record yourself explaining things and transcribe it. Use AI for outlines but keep it original. Try to mix personal experiences in there.

This really helps. If you find that walkthrough video, let me know.

I’d watch that too. Sounds useful.
Step one is to understand what your boss expects from you. Research and ask questions early on.
Learn Screaming Frog for technical SEO. It saves time.
When reporting, highlight the good numbers. Every SEO chart can look good if you focus on the right thing. Don’t try to change everything at once. Find wins and build from there.
@Moses10Coms
Can you explain more about reporting? I want to make sure my boss notices the progress.
@Moses10Coms
Focus on good stats like impressions going up. Then say those impressions will eventually turn into clicks. Meanwhile, fix site speed and other basics.
SEO jobs can be different depending on the company. Basic tasks include tracking traffic, monitoring keywords, and updating content. Use tools like SEMRush and Google Analytics.
Expect to do keyword research, fix on-page content, and build backlinks. Keep track of your results and update strategies as needed.
You got hired without knowing SEO? What’s your plan now?
