Is selling backlinks on an established site risky?

With Google’s updates hurting revenue for many of us, I’m considering selling a few backlinks to regain some income.

My site is about 5 years old in the magazine/entertainment space with steady traffic and over 2,000 backlinks. My thinking is that selling a few links here and there shouldn’t trigger a penalty since it’s a small fraction of the total backlinks.

At $45 per link, it’s tempting, but am I risking too much by doing this?

If you do it well, it should be fine. Quality articles with more than one link in relevant places tend to do better. Just avoid doing it in large volumes and keep it natural.

Good advice. I’ll keep these in mind—thanks!

If you only do a few and don’t advertise, you’re likely fine. Paid links on quality sites are often done through real networking, not just cold offers.

Thanks, yeah, I get that Reddit can’t give guarantees but still helpful to hear opinions.

After a certain amount, your site could be flagged as a link farm. There’s risk in being penalized and passing that penalty along to clients.

Makes sense. Just need to decide if it’s worth the risk.

@Alain
Exactly. I wouldn’t go beyond a handful myself, just to be safe.

It’s more about how natural the link profile looks than the count alone. Try forums like X, where PBN experts can weigh in. I know someone whose site got hit by a Google alert on ‘unnatural links,’ and it sank quickly.

Maybe focus on optimizing your current posts. Updating content can bring more traffic without adding any risks.
