Let’s Encrypt works great. We’ve used it on over 100 sites with no issues.
Not having SSL just makes your site look sketchy.
Definitely don’t pay $8/month. SSL should either be free or cost no more than $8 per year. Cloudflare gives it free if you set it up right.
